97th Verizon Millrose Games - Madison Square Garden - 2/6/04
Does the Prep own the Garden or what???? Just when you thought last year's meet could never be topped, the Rams do just that.
Brian McCabe runs a sterling 4:18.85 to get 3rd in the Invitational High School Mile. Written off as having no shot to score, Brian went in the 7th best of 8 competitors. But he put himself right in the mix right from the start, challenging for the lead at 1100 meters. Brian took 3rd over some of the best milers in the nation to win the first ever medal for a Prep runner in the Millrose Mile.
And the 4x800? They were not supposed to 3-Peat. They'd graduated too many stars, were running without McCabe, qualified 6th and anchor Greg Sans had yet to run a quality 800m this season. But so much for conventional wisdom. Dan Doherty led off in a fine 2:04.0, good for 2nd despite a late calf cramp, Soph Brian Doherty continues to amaze as he becomes that rare runner who breaks 2:00 for the first time on the Garden track! 1:59.9 by the soph gave Junior Jim Lundy the lead. Jim simply executed. Letting the pack come up on him, he calmly put them away with a superb 2nd 400m, logging 2:06.1 and extending the lead. And once anchor Greg Sans got the stick, it was never in doubt. Relaxing through the 400m, the All-American hammered home to 1:59.9 and nailed the Prep's 3rd straight Millrose win. The trophy is ours to keep!
Having sold the most tickets to the Millrose Games of any high school (an astounding 260...about 2% of the total!), we won a tour of the ground floor of the Garden, Jumbotron recognition and a team photo. 25 upperclassmen ran a lap on the fabled Garden track before the meet! This was the second year in a row the Prep earned this honor.
Did you catch it???? The Prep's Millrose-bound athletes appeared on CBS' "The Early Show" on Thursday, February 5th as part of the Verizon Millrose Games promotion. Autographs will be granted free of charge.

The soggy conditions did not deter more than 75 tough members of the Class of 2007 from the traditional run around the University Quadrangle. Luis Petrovich (center, with maroon shirt) won the a close-fought contest!
The Classic Run is a reincarnation of a tradition that goes back at least to the 1950's, when the Prep was a part of the University. The race, run around the picturesque quadrangle of the University, now known as "Edward's Parade", was brought back by Prep alumnus Phil Toomey, class of 1958. Phil got his first introduction to Track and Field at this event when he was a Prep Freshman in 1954, at the hands of the legendary coach Joe Fox. Phil went on to win 4 City Championships and numerous High school and collegiate accolades in the sport. In 1999, the Classic Run was added to the Freshman Field Day program thanks to the generous support of Mr. Toomey. Each year, approximately a third of the Freshman class participates in this memorable event, which has now become part of the storied historyof Fordham Prep Track & Field and Cross Country.
Congrats to all competitors!
