Execution. Sometimes it's all about execution. The middle distance squad was in great racing shape and ready for the CHSAA Championship today. All that was left was carrying out their racing strategies. And that's just what John Bradley (3200m winner), Brian Doherty (800m winner) and Terrence Egan (1600m runner-up by .14 secs) did today on Randall's Island...shocking everyone but themselves. The team was fifth with 23 points, all scored by underclassmen! Marc Ferrer scored in both hurdles, Jim Lundy was 6th in the 800, and Frosh Brian Murphy took 5th in the LJ!
5/14 - NY Archdiocesan Championships - Farrell HS

Fine performances from Terrence Egan (4:30.6 silver medal effort in 1600m), John Dingee (double bronze in TJ & LJ) and Jon Bednarz (13'6" PV from 2nd) helped solidify 3rd place.

Febles Sr. storms Randall's Island!
Hurdlers Win First Medals of Reborn NY Relays!

Sat 4/23 - New York Relays - Icahn Stadium, Randall's Island
The irony. Mr. Febles Sr. was mistakenly given an extra T-shirt for his winning Shuttle Hurdle team--the first HS team to win gold at the NY Relays in 20 years. He could have returned it, but after all, he must have printed thousands of NY Relay shirts for the storied meet in its heyday (1966-1984). So after so many years of only wearing the "eatos" (the slightly misprinted or unsellable smudged ones), he finally snags a clean one. Congrats Coach. See Journal News Article
Fine performances from John Dingee (20'5 LJ), Terrence Egan (2:01.5 800m leadoff), Corey Punter (55.4 400m) and Tim Sullivan (6-second PR in the 400m) highlight a fine team performance at the revival of a classic meet.
The New York Relays, begun in 1966 as the brainchild of former Prep Coach and legend Joe Fox, returned in triumphant fashion to that exotic East River landform known as Randall's Island. And the very first high school medals awarded at the meet in 20 years went to 8 Fordham Prep Hurdlers coached by none other than former co-meet director I. George Febles. See Journal News Article

Tom Carroll (1939-2005)
We mourn the loss of perhaps the Prep's greatest athlete ever. Tom broke 5 national records in 1957, most notably the High School records for the 800 meters and 880 yard runs. He was ranked 9th in the world in the 800 meters and named Track & Field News' Athlete in the Year for 1957. He was always a great friend of the Prep and especially the track team, and will be sorely missed. Four for the Ages
2/4/05 - 98th Millrose Games - Madison Square Garden
As has become the custom these past four years, none of it was easy. Illness, tough competition, questions seemed to surrounded the Prep's 2005 Millrose 4x800 relay as they sought an unprecedented 4th consecutive win at the Garden. But shortly after leadoff Terrence Egan's (2:03.9) amazing burst from last to1st place, all questions just became academic. John Bradley (2:01.8), Jim Lundy (2:01.9) and Brian Doherty (1:59.8) made history tonight, winning with the fastest time (8:07.63) the race has seen in 9 years.
Brian McCabe '04 gets another Millrose gold! Only 4 hours after running a fine 1:55 800m at the Armory Collegiate meet, the American University freshman leads off the winning 4x800m relay in 1:57.8!
Also making history was the unbelievable support from the Prep community. More than 300 students, alumni, faculty, family and friends easily made up the night's loudest cheering section, becoming the "fifth leg" carrying the maroon and white around the track to victory. Thanks to all!

Sat 1/15- Stanner Games - Armory
Bednarz 12'10 PV, Egan 4:37.50 mile, Lundy 2:39.50 1K and many other fine midseason performances!
The story: Egan had trouble off the line and was in 8th off the first turn, but calmly, steadily moved up to hand off with a slight lead on Farrell. Bradley held the lead through the 400m with 5 teams in a tight pack. Coming of an illness that kept him out of school 2 days over the past week, John faded slightly to 4th, but still right in the pack. Garvey held 4th with a controlled, even race. Handing off in 4th, the pack was only slightly extended, but St. Peter's Lionel Williams had rocketed past the entire field with an amazing 1:53.3 leg. Lundy reeled in St. Peter's as he and the other anchors made the race a real nailbiter, finishing in 4th and sealing the trip to 33rd and 7th on Feb 4th.
Not lost in the excitement was the birth of another star half-miler. Senior Conor Devaney ran and unheard-of 8 second PR with his blistering 2:04 anchor leg in the B team! And Soph Justin Consolazio logged an impressive 2 sec PR at 2:05!
1/12 - CHSAA Millrose Games Time Trials - Armory
In one of the more exciting Millrose Trials in recent memory, the 4x800 squad of Terrence Egan, John Bradley, Greg Garvey and Jim Lundy took 4th place to send Fordham Prep to the Millrose Games for the 4th consecutive year. It gives the squad a chance to become the first CHSAA team ever to win 4 consecutive relays at the Millrose Games, going back to the inception of the CHSAA races in 1945. What a race! 7 of the 8 teams held the lead at some point in the race, and the one that didn't (St. Anthony's) had a faster 4th-man time than any of the top six teams! Go figure!

END OF AN ERA....
The dusty rides across the flats, the shot puts rolling around the floor, the bottom-scrapes due to overcrowding, the rides home for groveling commuters (a la Weitzman '96, Flucus '02), the living organisms occasionally found in the trunk.......the memories go on and on.
No, it's not the departure of Coach Sullivan, Brian McCabe or Father Parkes that make this September a poignant time of transition for Prep Cross Country, it the passing of the Geo. Fourteen years, 132,000 miles (90% of which were pot-hole strewn Bronx miles), and about 500 track meets, the Geo Prizm (see background above) passes into retirement. It will spend its sunset days serving a charitable cause to which it will be donated, knowing it served admirably as automotive chronicler of the ascendancy of Fordham Prep Track.
-----------
Cross Country Practice has begun. Meet at the Prep each day this week (8/30-9/3) at 9am.
All athletes must have their Prep Physical and emergency release forms on file or on their person by August 30th.

Thanks Coach!
Coach Gerry Sullivan and the guys at the 2002 NYC Marathon
In a tough decision and tough loss for the Fordham Prep Track Community, Coach Gerry Sullivan '92 will teach and coach at Cardinal Hayes High School this fall, after 6 superb years as an assistant coach which included 2 as Head Cross Country Coach. We will miss his energy, expertise and love for the sport, but also wish him all the best.
Gerry joined Coach Febles' first Cross Country team at the Prep in the fall of 1988. It was a big team of 35 freshman and Gerry did not distinguish himself right away as his first race over the 1.5 mile course took over 13 minutes. But it wasn't long before his perseverance became well-known and respected. He would graduate as captain of the Prep's first-ever State qualifying Cross Country team, and as the school record holder in the steeplechase....a record he still holds.
Despite an injury-plagued career at Fordham University, Gerry still managed a fine 26:15 over the storied 5-mile collegiate course at Van Cortlandt Park. Joining the Prep coaching staff after a stint in the land of Pre (Eugene, Oregon), Gerry's enthusiasm for the sport was obvious to all, and quickly made an impact. The '98 team would earn the Prep's highest finish at the Cross Country Cities in 39 years, and would go on to become the first Prep team to qualify for the Millrose Games 4x800 relay in 22 years. As Head Cross Country Coach, Gerry would lead the 2002 team to a decisive sectional title despite starting the season ranked as low as 9th. It is certainly no coincidence that the Prep's 6 CHSAA and 2 National Relay titles have been won during his tenure at the Prep.
But more than the victories, Gerry brought everything that is great about our sport to the table. Maybe the greatest gift the Prep takes from Gerry is a lesson he always seemed to teaching: that hard work does bear fruit, and is always worth the effort. The mark he leaves is an indelible one that will not be forgotten. And we know he knows that he always has a home at the Prep.
Read Coach Sullivan's words of thanks to the Prep community.
One of Gerry's first charges, Daryn Johnson '99, will join the Prep's coaching staff this fall. Daryn was the 1998 CHSAA 3200 meter champion at the Prep, and went on to run 9:05 for the 3000m steeplechase for Cornell University, from which he graduated in 2003.
