In 1996, Biju Mathaikutty and Jason Macias had a friendly rivalry that saw them trade off the school's 110m High Hurdle
record numerous times during their Junior and Senior years. In the end, Biju set the record at 15.3 at the 1995 City Champs,
and Jason equalled it at the Eastern States a year later. Fast forward ten years and Coach Febles, Sr. has an even more
compelling rivalry on his crew. Mohamed Kanu broke the school record at the City Champs trials by running 15.47 (the
automatic or "FAT" time is intrinsically faster {by .24 secs} than the hand-timed 15.3s). In the very next heat, but 2 minutes
later, Brian Andreycak ran 15.41 to make the record his own. Both ran well in the trials but just shy of a new record, and then
they exploded in the finals. 14.98 for Mohamed wins the Cities, and 15.24 for Brian takes 4th. Numbers 1 and 2 on the all-time
list........until next time!
Jon Bednarz is gaining a rep for coming through when it counts. Chomping at the bit all winter to vault early and vault often,
Coach Carney kept the reigns on and pointed towards the Indoor Cities. There were some tough weeks of frustration for awhile,
but in the end Jon won when it counted. In the spring, Jon displayed the patience of a veteran, never concerned with vaulting too
much, just being sure that workouts went well. And so they did. So much so that Jon became only the 7th NYC high schooler
to clear 15', and 3rd at the Prep. However, he is the first Junior to clear that barrier. Look for more big days in the not-so-distant future.
UNDER 15
Jon becomes only the 3rd Prep Vaulter to clear 15', and Mohamed is first-ever Prep Hurdler to break 15 seconds!
OVER 15
Juniors Jon Bednarz and Mohamed Kanu claim CHSAA Titles!
Jon becomes only the 3rd Prep Vaulter to clear 15', and Mohamed is first-ever Prep Hurdler to break 15 seconds! The Prep takes 7th at Cities. Medallists include Brian Andreycak (4th place in hurdles, holding Prep record at 15.41 for about an hour), Jourdan White (only 2nd Prep Freshman ever to score at City Champs HJ), and ailing captains Terrence Egan and Brian Doherty (gut out 3rd in 1600, 4th in 400IH). Vin Fata 6th in 3000m Steeple, Dan Altenau breaks Soph Steeple record, 7th at 10:21.54. Check outJournal News Story

Mohamed Kanu and Brian Andreycak take 2nd & 3rd in the 110m HH, and Matt Keefer and Travis Long (both 51.8 secs) lead 4x400m to silver, John Dingee 3rd in the TJ, Freshman Jourdan White is 5th in the HJ! Rams follow up a great team performance with many great individual performances today. Great races from Nick Grecco (11:12.9 3200m), Phil O'Connell (2:09.9 800m) Carlos Petrovich (62.7 400mIH & 55.6 400m), and Mike Jennings (2nd place 1600m & 2:09.8 00m leg); Sophs crown 2 Sectional Champions in Dan Altenau (1600m) & Ed Jennings (3200m) and take 4th behind other great races like Mike Zizzo's 2:07.1 800m and Macris Dompor's scores in the hurdles and LJ.
Sat 5/6: Frosh & Soph City Champs - Mt. St. Michael HS
Down to the final event, where the Prep took first by virtue of a Farrell disqualification, the Frosh Outdoor City Championship came back to the Bronx for the first time since 2001! The record book took on a bunch of new performances, including Mike Jennings' eclipse of Brian McCabe's 2001 Frosh Steeplechase record. The Sophs did not fare quite as well as a team, but that is not to cast aspersions on the fine distance performances logged by the defending Indoor City Champions.

Penn Magic!
112th Penn Relays - Philadelphia
Down one of our top half milers in John Bradley, the Prep was thought to be going to the Penn Relays just for the experience. But they got the most of that experience as the 4x800 not only took the 12th and last qualifying spot for the Championship of America, but then parlayed their "experience" into 5th place medals. 7:58.62 on Friday, 7:51.57 on Saturday.
In the Pole Vault, Junior Jon Bednarz took 9th of 23 competitors in his first Penn Relays, the 4x100 of Joe Lota, Mohamed Kanu, Luis Petrovich and Mike Ulanski ran their fastest time by 1.5 seconds (45.41), and the 4x400 of Marcos Ferrer, Corey Punter, travis Long and Pat Hemsley had 2 PRs en route to a fine 3:34 4x400m.
Journal News Stories: Friday -
The 4x800m trials: The goal was to make it back for Saturday's final, the Championship of America. The team would need at least a sub 8 minute performance. Egan ran with characteristic aplomb, settling into 15th in the field of 17, eventually rocketing forward to 3rd at the exchange. Keefer was relaxed as he ran his own pace, drifting to 4th or so but closing hard as usual, 2:00.5. Bordonaro kept pace with the bulk of the pack, handing off to Doherty in 6th, 2:05.3, and Doherty reeled in 3 anchor legs, splitting 1:54.1 to finish 3rd in 7:58.62. The team took the last spot to qualify for the final, and one goal was in the books. On Saturday, the team would take a shot at earning medals, putting top 2-lapper Doherty in the 3rd position to hopefully put the team right in the mix for anchor Keefer--a known "closer" whose strong kick might prove handy. The guys executed the plan even better than expected. Egan ran his best leadoff ever, blasting by 3 teams in the final 50 meter to hand off in 2nd. Bordonaro chose today to run his first sub-2, running 1:59.2 handing off 6th in the fast field. Doherty got the crowd of 45,000 fans screaming as he charged home in 2nd, just meters off the lead. Keefer had the toughest job, that of racing the best 800m runners in the nation and hanging on for the medal. Running safely so as to ensure a strong kick, Keefer found 1:51 800m runner Mike Mark of Warwick drawn up on him with 200m to go, yet boldly pulled away in the last 50 meters. They qualified 12th, finished 5th for medals. 7:51.57!
The 4x100 was the same team that set the Soph school record last year in 46.7, and ran more than a second faster at this year's Penn, beating many CHSAA rivals in the process.
Swirling winds wreaked havoc on the HS Pole Vault field, but Jon Bednarz kept his poise and cleared 13'9.25" to take 9th in his first Penn Relays.
And the 4x400 drew the unlucky heat that saw them finish 11thh in a time (3:34) that would have medalled in nearly every previous heat.

Wed 4/19 - 5th Annual CHSAA Relay Carnival- Icahn Stadium
Many great races at all levels on a bright sunny day, albeit a fairly windy one at Icahn Stadium. The Hurdlers won both relays to stay undefeated, the Freshman won two sprint relays and the Sophs broke the school record in the 4x1600. The meet was capped off by the final duel in the final event, where National Soph Record holder Lionel Williams just edged out our own Brian Doherty to lead St. Peter's to a 8:02.29 to 8:02.36 4x800m win. Williams anchored in 1:52.3 to Doherty's 1:52.7 which will go down as one of the greatest 4x800's in Relay Carnival history (both teams broke the meet record as well).
4/17 - 29th Annual Iona Invitational - Iona Prep
For only the 2nd time in 36 years, the Prep's 400 meter record falls. This time at the hands of Brian Doherty, who won the Iona Invitational for the 2nd straight year in 49.1 seconds, breaking the 3 year-old record of 49.2, set by Conrad Dalton in 2003. Terrence Egan and Vin Fata go 1-2 in the Steeplechase, and Brian Andreycak wins the 110mHH. There were many other great performances, including Freshman Jourdan White's 5'8" HJ, Ciaran Sleeper's 10' PV, Mike Jennings' 7:24.5 2K Steeplechase and Phil O'Connell's 10:16 3k. Many more great efforts helped the Prep defend it's Iona Invitational Title!!
"Bad" grades: The "no-jewelry" rule was in effect for the first time in the 29-year history of the Iona Prep meet, and Mohamed Kanu and Chris Palicka were casualties of the switch. Mohamed was clocked in 15.1, which would have been a new school record, but was disqualified for violating the jewelry rule, due to his wearing his Fordham Prep Honors bracelet. If only he hadn't received honors....

Egan, patient as ever, led off in 3:09.1, 5th in a tight pack; Keefer passed rival Farrell and handed off 3rd in 51.6; Doherty quickly took the lead, but also Farrell's Jeff Carbonella with him; Brian split 1:54.6 to Carbonella's 1:54.9; with a one second lead, John Bradley set to work, leading, then trailing anchor Farrell's Dan Lewis for the whole race. He passed Lewis with 200m to go, gave up the lead with 130m left, then won the last sprint to seal the National Title! 10:14.68 breaks the New York State Catholic HS record set 14 years ago by Bishop Ford (10:17.38)! 4x800 Takes 5!
Anchor Brian Doherty becomes the Prep's first 3-time Millrose gold medalist photo: Journal News
As the Garden rang with the screams of the nearly 400 Prep faithful (that's nearly 3% of the meet's entire 14,000 in attendance), the Prep's 4x800 did what they have done for each of the past five years......captured the CHSAA 4x800 meter relay title at the storied Millrose Games.
Senior Terrence Egan shook of nagging injury and stomach distress to lead off in 2:01.2, right behind top runners Kevin Kiley of Chaminade and Robert Fleming of St. Anthony's. Senior John Bradley broke the race open with a smashing 1:58.9 leg, giving the Prep a sizable lead, with Msgr. Farrell closest in pursuit, about 20 meters back. Junior Matt Keefer had the unenviable task of holding off one of the nation's top half-milers in St. Peter's Lionel Williams, and one of the state's best distance runners in Farrell's Dan Lewis. Matt was more than up to the task. A careful approach allowed him to log a 2:05.7 leg and give senior anchor Brian Doherty a slight lead. And Brian slammed the door on the competition with a 1:58.0 carry, locking up the Prep's historic 5th consecutive title and the fastest time at Millrose since 1996.
Teachers, alums, family, classmates and teammates.........
Thank You for your tremendous support at the Garden!
99th Millrose Games - Friday February 3, 2006 - Madison Square Garden
Hey! When HS relays are often forgotten by the big media, it's refreshing to see the Prep's record noted by the USATF website! (The USATF is Track & Field's national governing body)
Last year the Prep 4x800 set a new meet record by being the first team ever to win 4 consecutive CHSAA relays at the Millrose Games. This year, the team again ventures into uncharted waters as they seek to win their fifth straight Millrose Games title. On Wednesday, January 11th, the 4x800 of Brian Doherty, Matt Keefer, Terrence Egan and John Bradley qualified for the 99th Millrose Games by winning the CHSAA Millrose trials in a nation-leading 7:54.88. It is the third time in the past five years that their trials performance was the nation's fastest time, and it is the fastest time the Prep has ever run at that meet....possibly a meet record.
Each of the past four years, the team's performance at the Millrose Games has been among the most electrifying of the meet. In 2002, Conrad Dalton anchored with a devastating kick to win our first Millrose title since 1958. In 2003, Conrad ran a pneumonia-hobbled 2:12 to lead off nearly 50 meters behind the other teams, only to see Brian McCabe bring down the house by rocketing the squad right back to first place. In '04, with McCabe in the Eilte Mile (he won the bronze) and the team ranked sixth of the six teams to qualify, the squad calmly put away the competition to claim the coveted Eastment trophy (awarded to the first team to win the title 3 times). Last year, illness again plagued the 4x800 as they qualified 4th, running the trials without mono-ridden Brian Doherty. But Brian was up for the big race and anchored the team to the fastest time at the Games in 9 years, getting one leg up on the new Eastment trophy.
A signature of the team's experience these past 4 years has been the unbelievable support of teammates, family, friends, alumni and faculty. Each year more Ram faithful have trekked to the Garden, including more than 300 in '05! Come push the team to another Millrose win at the Garden!
